The Relay mechanic
Relay is the Storm 3 mechanic Evolution 1.10 restored, letting you hand a teammate in behind an attack. It sits inside the Extra Tech option and is activated by holding Attack, so both players need Extra Tech enabled for it to be available in a match.

Relay is the second Storm 3 system the mod brought back in the 1.10 release, and it changes how a team fight flows: instead of calling a support in for a single assist, you pass the action to your partner.
What the release notes say
- Added in 1.10, alongside Instant Awakening, both listed under Extra Tech.
- Activated by holding Attack, per the release notes.
- Present in versus mode once Extra Tech is enabled, and selectable when creating a lobby.
Why it is a toggle
Relay is a Storm 3-era mechanic, and Storm 4 was not designed around it. Putting it behind Extra Tech lets the mod offer both rule sets without splitting the roster: the same build can play a modern Storm 4 match or a Storm 3-flavoured one.
In practice, that means agreeing the ruleset before the match. If you are playing online, set Extra Tech when you create the lobby; if you are playing local versus, enable it in the versus settings.
What it pairs with
| System | Interaction |
|---|---|
| Supports | Relay works alongside support types rather than replacing them; Charge Assist and two-man team support damage were buffed in the same era of builds |
| Team ultimates | The mod has added team ultimates for more pairings — Itachi and Kisame, Hebi Sasuke and Orochimaru — which matters for how a relayed team feels |
| Extra tech items | 1.10 added an Extra Tech option in VS mode, so the whole optional layer travels together |
